Music sales have shrunk considerably on the Norwegian market over the last year. While the sales figures for the first half of 2006 showed a 12% decrease, sales seem to have temporarily halted its downward trend – the July figures tell the tale of a phonogram market that is at least stable compared to July 2005.

The latest sales figures from the Association of Norwegian Record Distributors show that music sales increased 1% in value in July 2006 compared to last year. This includes sales of physical goods as well as downloaded tracks. Phonogram sales were up 2% in volume and down 3% in value compared to July 2005.

Sales of singles were down 62% in volume and 52% in value compared to July last year.

Sales of DVD music titles were up as much as 63% in volume and 110% in value in July.

So far in 2006, 5m albums, 181 000 singles and 188 000 music DVDs have been sold on the Norwegian market, amounting to a total turnover of NOK 327m ($ 52,2/ € 0,8m). Compared to the same time period last year, this represents a reduction of 11% in volume and 13% in value for sales of physical units. So far in 2006, music download services have generated a turnover of NOK 11,1m ($ 1,77m/ € 1,38m). Total sales figures, including downloads and physical units shifted, shows a reduction of 10% so far in 2006.
