Bergen’s Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Babies’s emotionally charged Loosebox album earned them a wealth of rave reviews. Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Babies share a thing or two with bands such as 16 Horsepower, Lambchop and Giant Sand but still the Bergen band has tons of identity of it own. The songs are often quite dark and introvert but front man Gunnar Emmerhoff & co still manage to bring across a wide range of emotions – much a testament to the band’s strong sense of melody. Loosebox has moments of darkness but also passages of lyricism and optimism, resulting in a wholesome and rewarding album.
The single ”Baby Sinister” was featured on last year’s excellent Rec 90 compilation ”This is Norway”. The compilation was met with rave reviews abroad, and Emmerhoff’s contribution in particular, was singled out by Q Magazine in its review: ”Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Babies menace beautifully with the icy charm of an arctic Nick Cave” wrote Q’s Paul Stokes.
Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Babies have now completed recording their next album which has tentatively been named “If this Darkness lingers”. Scheduled Norwegian release date is the 1st of September 2003.
Loosebox was originally released on the band’s own label, Melancholy Records, but Emmerhoff & The Melancholy Babies are now signed to Norwegian indie label Tuba Records AS.
