The following day the same work will be played at the Prague Premieres Festival by the North Bohemian Orchestra. This year the festival bears the subtitle “heading north”

Ørjan Matre was born in Bergen in 1979. His musical background is wide-ranging and he started composing at an early stage. But it was only during studies in composition with composer Rune Rebne that his musical curiosity was fully stimulated. Later he proceeded to study composition at the Norwegian Academy of music, tutored by Bjørn Kruse, Lasse Thoresen, Olav-Anton Thommessen and Henrik Hellstenius.

Ørjan Matre has written a number of works for diverse constellations; from smaller chamber- and solo pieces to works for bigger ensembles and orchestras. And many of them have been performed, both at home and abroad. Several of his pieces are written for large ensembles, and among the entities to have performed these are Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, The Norwegian Radio Orchestra, The Norwegian Army Band Bergen (NABB), The Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, Matre has collaborated with musicians such as Rolf Borch, Ingfrid Beie Nyhus, Tora Augestad and Tanja Orning.

His oeuvre “Four Miniatures for Orchestra” has been recorded by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra under the direction of Rolf Gupta. The recording, which was released in October 2006 (Aurora), features pieces by four young composers.

Further, Matre is currently engaged as the in-house composer for the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra for the 2006/7 season, -a collaboration that will also extend into the next concert season. This year his music will be performed at concerts and festivals in Norway, The Czech Republic, Iceland, Russia and China.
