With Volcano, Satyricon managed a feat that no other black-metal band can rival: to release the first black-metal album to reach national Top 3 sales charts. With respect to sales figures and media buzz generated by the album, Volcano can be viewed as a turning point for the genre – the departure from the underground and the arrival at the mainstream. No other band on the black-metal circuit have previously achieved the same media attention and widespread appeal that Satyricon, fronted by Sigurd von Wongraven, was awarded. Healthy sales figures, applauded live-shows and well-articulated media-appearances has firmly established Satyricon as one of Norway’s most central, albeit musically extreme acts.
