This spring the Bergen duo’s music is used in no less than nine different games. And what was before merely a peripheral part of the market for music, is becoming an ever more important arena. The use of songs in games has turned into a major means of marketing, outmoding the traditional media and letting indy-sphere artists reach millions in markets where they would have a hard time getting radio and TV slots.
The gaming companies have calculated that between 20 and 40 million copies of games featuring Datarock songs are likely to be sold. With an average of 2.5 users per game that means that the Norwegian’s music is likely to reach between 50 and 100 million people! In terms of audiences these are numbers never before even dreamt for acts like Datarock, and even if these millions do not proceed to buy Datarock’s records or go see them live, it still produces some very pretty financial figures for the duo. The gaming industry has indeed become an important source of income for many artists, especially those whose music is as well suited as the soundtrack for playing games, such as Datarock’s.
Some of the games in question are global hits such as: FIFA Street, Need for speed, The Sims, Madden NFL 08 and Grand theft auto.
The duo, which swells to a full band line-up live, will soon embark on a far-reaching tour of Europe visiting Spain, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany between February 8th and 25th. Then they leave immediately for another six shows in Australia in March. (1st- 9th)
