Music Export Norway (MEN) was established in 2000 by the Norwegian music industry to provide access to information on Norwegian artists and companies, in addition to assisting the Norwegian music industry by organising international trade show participation and presentations designed to increase worldwide awareness of Norwegian music. MEN has now opened an office in London, with Jonas Vebner in charge.
The London office will collaborate with Norwegian and British record companies, management and musicians to promote Norwegian music through record releases, digital distribution, concerts, films and promotional events. The UK is one of Norway’s biggest music export markets, after Sweden and Denmark. ‘United Kingdom is one of Norway’s most important music markets. From the London office, we will continue to develop an already existing good relationship with the British market, facilitate showcases and promotional events,’ says Inger Dirdal, managing director of MEN.
Jonas Vebner’s first project in the UK is The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, which will take place from 15 – 18 May. Norway is the focus country of the festival this year, with so far ten Norwegian acts booked. The musicians who will be at the festival are Accidents Never Happen, Ane Brun, Casiokids, Dylan Mondergreen, Ida Maria, Nils Bech, Sigh & Explode, Silje Nes, the Lionheart Brothers and Ungdomskulen.
‘In the years we’ve been running The Great Escape we’ve had some fantastic artists from all over the world, but one country we’ve always been able to depend on for cutting edge talent is Norway. With the launch of Music Export Norway’s office in London this year and the emergence of some new and exciting bands we feel the timing is perfect to make Norway our lead country for The Great Escape Festival and Convention,’ explains Jon Mcildowie from The Great Escape. sd
