Having performed for years as a highly respected member of Atomic, perhaps the most central collective on the young Norwegian jazz scene, pianist Håvard Wiik finally debuts with his acclaimed trio. Accompanied by bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen Wiik explores a wide range of moods, tempos and forms of expression on ‘Postures’. On the opening tracks, Wiik works the mid to lower ranges of his piano with an insistence verging on severity while the rhythm section busy themselves beneath and around him, Johansen’s drums flickering like the whistle of sniper fire. As the record progresses, warmer and more lyrical moods are introduced along with space and looser and more intuitive interplay. There’s a complex intelligence and dense power to this trio which becomes ever more evident as they gain momentum during ‘Postures’. Seen as a whole, ‘Postures is a thoroughly coherent, vigorous, wise and contemplative recording – very enjoyable.sd
