On ‘A Preference to other things’ young double bass virtuoso Håkon Thelin presents a carefully balanced selection of contemporary double bass reference oeuvres and own compositions. He traverses the spectrum from the ultra demanding technical performance entailed in recording the works of Drukmann, Xenakis –recordings tipped to become presidential in the field- via the more lyrical moods invoked in Bent Sørensen’s piece ‘The hill of heartless Giant’, to his own compositions for double bass and percussion. The record thus exhibits the diversity and versatility of the double bass both in terms of musical semiotics and in terms of instrumental skill and technique. His versatility is indeed unique, as he is involved in every imaginable style, and his rare talent also comprises composition.sd
