Veteran pianist and composer Jan Gunnar Hoff returns to the centre of the stage with his fourth album. The all-star line-up reads like a who’s who on the Norwegian jazz scene; saxophonist Tore Brunborg, bassist Bjørn Kjellemyr and Audun Kleive on drums. Young hot-shots Mathias Eick (of Jaga Jazzist fame) on trumpet and guitarist Børge Petersen-Øverleir provide additional voices inn all the right places. The release is solidly anchored in the rich Scandinavian chamber-jazz tradition but is also a testament of Keith Jarret’s lasting legacy. On ‘In town’ Hoff shows off flair for melodic tunes with challenging rhythmic patterns that help propel the compositions. The interplay is flawless, bearing witness of years of touring and studio sessions. The band manages to bind lyric and romantic piano-driven tunes with up-tempo numbers that groove and propel the ensemble forwards.sd
