No less than three new Norwegian works composed by Cecilie Ore, Rolf Wallin and Maja S. K. Ratkje will see their premieres at the Présences 2005.

Additional Norwegian works featured at the Présences 2005 include Lasse Thoresen’s concerto for two cellos and orchestra, “Les Enluminures” with Aage Kvalbein and Liv Opdal as soloists. Rolf Gupta will also conduct his own orchestral work “Chiaroscuro”. On the 19th of February Présences runs an Electronique special that features jazz vocalist Sidsel Endresen paired with noise master Helge “Deathprod” Sten and noted jazz keyboardist Christian Wallumrĝd.

Renowned, vital and vibrant composer Maja Ratkje was approached by Radio France last year with a rather challenging request: write a work for orchestra with herself as the featured soloist. This marks the first time the respected composer/vocalist/noise musician composes for an orchestra, and definitely her debut as a vocalist with an orchestra. Says Ratjke on her upcoming Paris debut: “I’ll do what I usually do and I’ll utilise my experiences as an improviser. But this is a field that’s governed by strict convention so I’m quite anxious. Some people that have never sat their foot in a concert hall have signalled that they’re coming to see my Paris concert - I hope that the work can act as a door-opener in this respect. It’ll be very different from a conventional setting with a vocalist in gala dress and orchestra in the back.”

In the orchestral movement, Ratkje has based the composition on her approach to sound sculpting. With a basis that consists of electronically manipulated sounds she has strived to orchestrate and write scores based on the electronic sound palette: “It turned out to be quite an impossible idea to carry out. I worked with the fine details of the orchestral movement and the sonorous aspects of the musicians’ parts – the end result is not too far from what I had originally envisioned. It’s also very positive that conductor Rolf Gupta is also a composer – I feel that the piece is taken seriously both by him and the musicians.”

Ratkje will top off the orchestral movement with vocal improvisation, bar a few notes written as a framework for the improvised parts.

Rolf Wallin’s brand new work “The Age of Wire and String” will see its premiere on 2 February performed by the French sextet Ensemble Court-Circuit.

11 February will see Cecilie Ore’s new work “Cirrostratus” premiered by the Bergen ensemble BIT20.

Présences is the Radio France’s main contemporary music event and runs over 14 days each February. This year’s festival is no. 15.
From 29 January to 13 February Présences runs 23 free concerts, presents 58 composers, features 40 world premieres, 18 French premieres and 17 works commissioned by Radio France.
