Kari Beate Tandberg - Biography
The Norwegian composer Kari Beate Tandberg (b. 1958) started her musical career as a pianist, receiving her diploma degree in composition at the Norwegian State Academy (NSAM) in 2002. She has participated at seminars by Xenakis, Gubaidulina, Grisey and Jonathan Harvey among others. Tandberg is occupied both as composer and music teacher.
Her most important works is Trakt (1998) for symphony orchestra, Tremble (1999) for nine instruments, Songlines (2000) for bass-clarinet and electronics, Abstraktes Bild (2001) for string orchestra, Optophonia for large sinfonietta (2005), Thymos for alto-saxophone, marimba and symphonic windensemble and Dwindle (2009) for stringquartet. Her music has been performed in several european countries and in Japan.
As a reseach fellow at State Academy of Music (2003-2006) Kari Beate Tandberg in her project From Moving Pictures to Organized Sound, was examining the possibilities of using digital analysis from moving images as basis for composing music. In 1995 she won first price in the Fanny Mendelssohn Competition for woman composers with the piece Custodia for three singers and eight instrumentralists. Her stringquartet Dwindle will be performed during Nordic Music Days 2010 in Copenhagen.
