Andsnes nominated for Gramophone awards

One of Norway’s foremost musical ambassadors, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, is nominated by Gramophone magazine for the Artist of the Year 2003-4 award.

The Gramophone Awards nominations is made up of six artists who have enjoyed great success on record or on the concert stage over the past 12 months and who, according to Gramophone magazine, are set to continue to have a major impact in the coming year.

The nominees in the Artist of the Year 2003-4 category are Marin Alsop, Angela Hewitt, Ian Bostridge, Mitsuko Uchida, Murray Perahia and of course our own Andsnes.

Says Gramophone Magazine on the Andsnes nomination: “Leif Ove Andsnes is a musician who has grown up in front of one’s eyes with startling speed. In the past couple of years he has grown in stature as a pianist and commands the stage with an ease and security that is totally devoid of ego.

Whether on record – in Schubert sonatas or songs (with Ian Bostridge), or in chamber music by Dvorįk– or in the concert hall (witness a stunning Rachmaninov First Concerto with the LSO and Antonio Pappano), Andnes is now a major figure on the international stage.

Seldom can a new recording of the Grieg and Schumann piano concertos have engendered such a sense of anticipation as his forthcoming collaboration with Mariss Jansons.

Only a couple more months to wait!”
