Ketil Haugsand: J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations

MIC’s Listen to Norway profile series continues with Ketil Haugsand’s interpretations of Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

Ketil Haugsand: J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations cover

Bach’s Goldberg Variations should not need a thorough presentation. Ketil Haugsand’s harpsichord interpretation of these works is a massive undertaking that sees new aspects of Bach’s thoroughly interpreted works unveiled. The listener can relish the stunning beauty of these variations, be it Haugsand basking around in exquisite inventio and counterpoint, fully enjoying an extremely rich and dynamic espressivo or honing himself on some hair-raising technical challenges. The music is complex, both thematically and rhythmically, but Haugsand’s mastery of his harpsichord sees few equals and leaves the listener with an album that can be filed in the compulsory-listening category.
