Jørn Simen Øverli: Pengenes oppmuntrende virkning

MIC's Listen to Norway series continues with Jørn Simen Øverli's "Pengenes oppmuntrende virkning"

Jørn Simen Øverli: Pengenes oppmuntrende virkning cover

With texts from Berthold Brecht and music by composers Kurt Weill and Hans Eisler, Jørn Simen Øverli has managed to bridge influences from German music hall tradition with elements of contemporary modern music in a present Norwegian-language context. Øverli manages to revitalise the German poems that date from the mid- 1900s through skilful translations and tasteful arrangements. Solid assistance is given by his companions: Stian Carstensen (Farmers Market) and Arve Henriksen (Supersilent) add the right dose of improvisation to the lively ballads. The album is a testament to the rich, critical, witty and broad political cabaret tradition of mid 20th century Germany. Fifty years later, the songs are still relevant in a contemporary setting.
