Tord Gustavsen Trio in Washington DC

Jazz outfit Tord Gustavsen Trio, whose music has been hailed by the New York Times as "séance music" and capable of melting "off the bandstand into puddles of feeling", are set to play in Washington, DC, on December 7.

This is music that sings, at once gentle and robust. Listeners are invited into a musical universe of lyricism and subtle funkiness. The trio stands out as a cutting edge romantic ensemble, playing melodic jazz without sacrificing the freedom of improvisation and the urge to create music as honest and intense as possible. While displaying a striking original touch, their music is also influenced by sources as diverse as early blues; gospels and hymns; Scandinavian folk music; and Impressionist composers.

In the 3 years that have elapsed since “Changing Places” – a debut album that proved both a popular and a critical success world-wide – the trio has toured the USA, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Scandinavia and Australia, crystallizing the musical approach and developing new compositions.

Extremely rare for an instrumental album, the new release entered the Norwegian sales charts and became the no. 1 selling album in Norway in its second week. The album has also sold well in several other territories, including the USA, UK and France.

The trio members are among the most in-demand players on the intriguing Norwegian ‘extended jazz’-scene. They are known from projects like Supersilent, Farmers Market, Bugge Wesseltoft Group, Silje Nergaard Band, Jan Erik Kongshaug Group, Nymark Collective, Aire & Angels and others.
