The Guardian praises the Bukta Festival
Northern Norway’s cultural capital, Tromsø, hosts the vibrant Bukta festival which was praised by the UK’s Guardian newspaper last week.
With Iggy and the Stooges on the top of the bill, Tromsø’s Bukta Festival scored a major coup earlier this year. Northern Norway’s biggest festival attracts a growing international audience and in July, the Guardian’s Neil Parry flew to the Arctic city to check out Iggy Pop along with such acts as The Hives, Supergrass, Calexico, The Waterboys and Norwegian acts Turbonegro and (Madrugada front-man) Sivert Høyem and The Volunteers.
Says Perry on the Arctic festival: “If Glastonbury has become the Bluewater shopping centre of live music events, the Norway’s Bukta festival is the funky little boutique tucked into a side street that you discover by happy accident, No mobile charging zones, healing fields, Banksy installations or welly one-upmanship. Just a stage plonked on the edge of a fjord in what is normally a picnic area, nothing but water and show capped mountains behind it, and three days of music.”
Describing the lively atmosphere of the vibrant cultural capital of Northern Norway, Perry comes up with quote of the year: “It’s like a whole town is on chrystal meth … and entirely populated by models.”
Despite having some misgivings with the weather and the festival cuisine, Perry nevertheless praises the Arctic festival and ends his article with a highly positive statement: “…you really should go next summer.”
