Food was formed at the 1998 Molde International Jazz Festival when the profiled English sax player Iain Ballamy was invited to perform with three astonishing young Norwegian musicians. It soon became clear that the blend of lain's distinctive saxophone and Arve Henriksen's breathy trumpet textures was the perfect foil for the entrancing bass and drum trips created by Mats Eilertsen and Thomas Strønen. They knew immediately that they wanted to play together regularly and since then freedom, creativity and freshness have become watchwords for their music.
Highlights of those celebrated first performances at Molde were released as their first album, Food. Their second disc, ”Organic & GM Food” was released in late 2001 and hailed by many jazz critics as one of the best albums of the year. "Another beautiful feast" said The Guardian, while The Independent viewed it as "perhaps the most interesting improvised music in the world at the moment".
”Veggie”, their third album, is produced and mixed by Helge Sten, aka Deathprod, founder member and producer of Supersilent, another highly acclaimed quartet. He is also a skilled sound artist in his own right. "Veggie" also includes an exclusive track from Deathprod.
Food is signed to renowned record label Rune Grammofon, and their music shifts from very low-key instrumental improvisation to demanding experimental electronica. It’s far from mainstream, and although they haven’t hit it big in their native country, Food has found an audience in the UK where the band is currently touring. The band played in London on the Fertiliser festival and on the Royal Academy of music this fall. The tour ends on the 17th at St George in Bristol.
