Solveig Slettahjell: Solveig Slettahjell: Silver

Publisert: 01/21/2005 av Christian Lysvåg

MIC’s Listen to Norway series continues with Solveig Slettahjell’s 'Silver' album.

Solveig Slettahjell’s second album is entitled ‘Silver’. So called perhaps to describe the acoustic shimmering, glimmering and shining properties of the music. The metallic, visual metaphor misses, however, the warmth which is at the core of the performance. For this is not a cold, distant beauty radiating from afar, the songs approach you and caress you all the while they also twinkle and keep their distance. The overall impression of both the selection and the performance is one of delightful surprise and disbelief over such joyous and inventive ways interpreting the material and expressing its beauty anew. The expressed intention must be said to have been successfully fulfilled: to appropriate the music and reissue it bearing the distinction of the personal relationship between the songs and Slettahjell with the ‘Slow motion quintet’. Billboard magazine has previously pronounced Slettahjell “The biggest thing to happen in jazz since Diana Krall”. ‘Silver’ only confirms the statement.
