When the Filharmonica Della Scala found itself without a conductor in early April it turned to Vienna-based Norwegian conductor Arild Remmereit. When the Pittsburgh Sympnony Orchestra needed a conductor in mid-April, Remmereit stepped in. When Orchestre National de France’s conductor cancelled an appearance due to illness they called Mr. Remmereit. By substituting for some of the world’s most central conductors and delivering flawless performances, Arild Remmereit has quickly built up a strong reputation for himself.
In a recent and thorough article in The New York Times, James R. Oestreich draws a portrait of “the hottest conductor you’ve never heard of.” Remmereit caused quite a stir after his mid-April performance with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in place of Cristoph von Dohnanyi, with a program which included Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll”, Schumann’s Fourth Symphony and Brahm’s Second Piano Concerto: “If the sensation he created in Pittsburgh is any indication, he seems destined for big things, and soon” writes Oestreich. The Norwegian conductor left a lasting impression with the local audience: “… the only thing listeners seemed to want to talk about afterward was Mr. Remmereit” writes NY Times, “Sensational” was the word heard most frequently in a Talk-Back reception”.

Arild Remmereit has resided in Vienna since 1987. He took his first piano lessons at the age of six, his first trumpet lessons at eight, and had also a career as a boy soprano. Later he joined pop and jazz bands playing keyboards.
In 1986 he graduated from the Norwegian Conservatory of Music in Oslo where he studied piano, song and composition. He attended the Aspen conducting seminar in Colorado (1985), Jorma Panula’s class of conducting in Stockholm (1986-87) and graduated from "Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst" in Vienna under the direction of Prof. Karl Österreicher (1987-92). At the same institution he attended a master class with Zubin Mehta.
He studied with Leonard Bernstein at Santa Cecilia in Rome and assisted him at recordings in Vienna (1987-90). He assisted Myung W. Chung at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo (1989) and at the National Opera in France, Paris (1994) and Mariss Jansons in Vienna (2004)
Remmereit conducted “Wiener Residenz Orchester” (1989-92). He was Artistic Director at the Ukrainian State Opera in Kharkov (1992-95). Simultaneously he conducted the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Kiev. These ensembles he led on tours through Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
