MIC's Listen to Norway series continues with Per Vollestad / Sigmund Hjelset's Sinding Songs. Vol 3

One of Norway’s foremost composers of classical songs, Christian Sinding, is here presented with a selection performed by baritone Per Vollestad and pianist Sigmund Hjelset. Sinding was at one point accused by his contemporaries in Norway of being more German than Norwegian. This was in a sense true, since most of his time was spent in Germany and most of his work was related to the German language. But later on he discovered the lyrical aspects of the ”new Norwegian” language -developed on the basis of rural dialects- and dedicated much work to it. The great Edward Grieg proclaimed in 1891 that he held Sinding as one of his absolute favourite young composers, with a distinct personality to his work. Per Vollestad is among Norway’s finest baritones while Sigmund Hjelset, specialising in accompanying singers, is sought after all over the world.
