Dimmu Borgir, undoubtedly one of Norwegian black-metal’s biggest names launches this week a re-recorded version of the band’s classic 1996 album ‘Stormblåst’.
The original version of ‘Stormblåst’ was recorded on a tight budget and with little time to spare, resulting in an album that never met the expectations of the band members. Even if the release has been hailed as a classic by metal fans all over the world, Dimmu Borgir have had a long standing ambition of re-releasing ‘Stormblåst’ in a revised and better version. When the licence deal with the former record label expired earlier this year, original members on the ‘Stormblåst’ sessions, vocalist Shagrath and guitarist Silenoz teamed up with producer Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain) and Mayhem’s Hellhammer on drums to re-record the 1996 tracks. The end result is a record that sounds fuller, harder, more complete and much more vital than the original recording. In addition to the classic tracks, the new version of ‘Stormblåst’ adds two brand-new audio tracks: Sorgens Kammer – Del II and Avmaktslave, plus a live DVD of an entire set filmed from last year's Ozzfest.
Says Dimmu Borgir guitarist Silenoz to Norwegian daily Aftenposten: “Many fans regard our second album ‘Stormblåst’ as a classic but we don’t share that opinion. Even if the music in itself is more than good enough, there is just no magic in it. That record never became what it should be due to a minimal budget, an incompetent record label and a too short time-frame. The idea of correcting this mistake has been in the back of our minds for years now and finally we’ve been able to re-record it.”
Dimmu Borgir are scheduled to begin writing material for their next studio album this fall for a tentative late 2006 release. The CD, which will feature a guest appearance by Mayhem’s Hellhammer on drums, is reported to be "a full story/concept album". In order to be able to complete the new album, Dimmu Borgir recently turned down an offer to tour with Korn on an upcoming US tour. Says vocalist Shagrath: “We get offers to tour constantly, and we just had to draw a line somewhere. We cant’ do both at once and the entire band is totally committed to take the next step.”
Dimmu Borgir will shortly be filming a video for the track Sorgens Kammer – Del II with director Patric Ullaeus of Sweden's Revolver Film Company.
‘Stormblåst’ will be released in North America on February 7, 2006 with a limited collector’s item. This edition will only be available in the North American pressing.
