With his work “Mozart, You and Me”, the 30 year old Oslo-based composer made a strong impression on the international jury, thus securing a performance of the work in Hong Kong on the 27th of November 2007.
Says the composer (who is also the head of ISCM’s Oslo department) on the honour bestowed on him: ‘Needless to say, it’s great to be chosen and have your work being performed in other latitudes than our own here in Norway. It would have been really interesting to be a fly on the wall in Hong Kong to experience how the audience and musicians respond to my re-interpretation of Mozart.’
Erik S. Dæhlin (b. 1976) studied percussion at the Music Conservatory in Tromsø and graduated in 1998. As a chamber musician he has extensive experience from a number of rhythmic and contemporary music events including the Ilios Festival, the Festival of North Norway, Ultima, Borealis and the Autunnale Festival. In addition to being a permanent member of NING, percussion ensemble Puls and performance outfit SPLOING, Dæhlin has contributed to a number of radio recording sessions for national broadcaster NRK P2 and also phonogram recordings featuring Norwegian contemporary classical repertoire.
Says the composer on his work “Mozart, You and Me” and his relation to the Austrian master: ‘Some might say that one should not tamper with Mozart. However, I choose to do so as I find the canonisation of Mozart (and other iconic composers) rather strange. It is perhaps not challenging to justify such a canonisation on historical and financial terms, but in a day and age said to be characterized by pluralism, many still tend to canonize and iconize certain composers and artists. The fact that the whole canonization mentality is to be discussed at the World Music Days 2007 in Hong Kong, makes the performance of the work and the underlying governing thought even more interesting and exciting. My curiosity in regard to this phenomenon is also a matter of the musical matter and how it is treated. The foundation for my composition is Mozart’s Divertimento in D, music for entertainment – something that should fit well in a contemporary setting…’
The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is an important international network of members from around fifty countries, devoted to the promotion and presentation of contemporary music - the music of our time. ISCM has had a distinguished history. From its foundation in Salzburg in 1922, a receptiveness to aesthetic and stylistic diversity has been a characteristic of the Society. Today more than ever with the incredible diversity which exists in contemporary musical expression around the world, this ideal is still strongly supported by ISCM members.
Each year, ISCM presents the World Music Days Festival, hosted by one of ISCM’s national sections, which provides a feast of contemporary music across a broad range of contemporary practice. The host nation has some flexibility in determining the individual themes that drive the programming of the Festival, either presenting a showcase of activity from around the world, or applying other criteria for the selection and programming of works.
The ISCM World Music Days Festival also provides an opportunity for the ISCM members to meet in their annual congress, to discuss issues affecting contemporary music and matters of mutual concern.
