Germany’s NDR Radiophilharmonie’s next chief conductor, young Norwegian hotshot Eivind Gullberg Jensen is set to lead the National English Opera for a string of performances in March.

Making his UK operatic debut with the National English Opera, Eivind Gullberg Jensen will conduct the anticipated return of David Alden’s Olivier Award-winning production of composer Janacek’s 'Jenfa'.

Alden’s searing production of Jenfa now receives its first revival since winning two Olivier Awards in 2007, including one for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for Amanda Roocroft, who returns in the title role. Jenfa is composer Janček's most popular work. Ostensibly bleak - a stepmother commits an unspeakable act of cruelty - this nonetheless remains an opera where love and forgiveness triumph.

Rising star Jensen will at the start of 2009/10 become chief conductor of NDR Radiophilharmonie, Hannover. His highlights of the 2008/9 season include debuts with Oslo Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, WDR Cologne and Iceland Symphony. Following the success of his recent debut with the London Philharmonic in May 2008, he has been re-invited to the orchestra in spring 2009 and will also return to Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden/Freiburg (with Truls Mrk as his soloist) and Orchestre National de France (both in Paris and at the Orange Festival in August 2009 with Hlne Grimaud). Further ahead, the 2009/10 season sees him make return visits to Orchestre de Paris (where he works alongside Nikolai Lugansky) and Munich Philharmonic (where he again appears with Truls Mrk), and he will also debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Bamberg and Basel symphonies.

After studying violin and musical theory in Trondheim, Jensen went on to study conducting with legendary Professor Jorma Panula in Stockholm, and in Vienna, with Leopold Hager. He has participated in the Aspen Music Festival with David Zinman and in master classes with Kurt Masur in Poland and New York.
