After four highly acclaimed albums in ECM Records and numerous successful tours throughout Europe, the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble is back in England with its unique group sound and beautifully original music. The ensemble is set to visit five cities from 20 to26 October; Gateshead, London, Bristol, Manchester and York.
For the first time Christian Wallumrød brings a sextet to the IK. Besides himself (on piano, harmonium and toy piano), it comprises Eivind Lønning on trumpet, Gjermund Larsen (violin, Hardanger fiddle and viola), saxophonist Espen Reinertsen, cellist Tove Törngren and Per Oddvar Johansen (drums, vibraphone).
Each of the Norwegian players brings a wealth of experience to the total group sound. Per Oddvar Johansen and Christian Wallumrød have worked closely in various collaborations for 20 years, and the drummer has contributed to countless groups and recordings, for instance with Trygve Seim, The Source and vocalist Solveig Slettahjell. Gjermund Larsen is considered one of the most prominent young musicians on the Norwegian folk music scene. In addition to his own trio he works amongst others with Majoursuen and Trondheimsolistene.
Despite their young age both Eivind Lønning and Espen Reinertsenare very experienced and highly versatile musicians who have developed a personal sound with their special focus on extended techniques. Together they form the duo Streifenjunko, and they are also part of the Japanese/Norwegian group Kobuko Senju. Swedish cellist Tove Trörngren is an active chamber musician, and she is a member of the Dutch Duo Esitvo, Swedish Music for the string and the Norwegian Tango Twis.
The work of pianist and composer Christian Wallumrød and his ensemble continues to surprise and develop in strong, playful and intriguing directions, The recent CD Fabula Suite Lugano has been highly acclaimed throughout and the United States. It was also nominated for the Nordic Music Prize 2010.
‘…with this latest salvo his creations have never sounded more bewitching and elusive (…) the luminescent sound of the group is practically enough to dazzle the ears for hours’ – Peter Margasak, Downbeat
‘…a music that is, by turns, of the head and heart, celebratory and mocking (…) Is it jazz? No. It’s music that makes its own space’ Ray Comiskey, Irish Times
