Det ser ikke ut til å være ende på mengdene av støtteerklæringer som raser inn til BEK. Både toneangivende elektroniske kunstnere i inn-og utland, musikere, mediaforskere og privatpersoner legger inn sine erklæringer i BEKs gjestebok. Ballade bringer her videre deler av den oppsiktsvekkende store listen.

BEK ikke inne på statsbudsjettet - fremtiden er truet!
BEK er ikke foreslått inn på statsbudsjettet fra neste år. Norsk kulturråd har gitt tilskudd til prøvedrift i 4 år, og vil ikke kunne støtte BEK i fortsettelsen. BEK står dermed i akutt fare for å måtte legge ned.
Som et ledd i kampen mot nedleggelse, ber vi om støtteerklæringer fra brukere og andre som har et forhold til BEK. Signer oppropet og legg gjerne inn noen ord om hvorfor du støtter BEK's fortsatte eksistens!

I would like to express my disappointment at the news of the possible close down of BEK. As an artist who has visited Bergen to do lecture work I became aware of
BEK and see it is an incredibly important facility and organisation within the creative art community of Bergen. The quality of work that has come out of BEK should prove how valuable it is within city, and in an international context. It shows an incredible lack of foresight to even consider closing down BEK.
I am sure the removal of this organisation would also have a detrimental effect on the quality and numbers of students that would consider studying at the Art School there, after all if the city does not consider contemporary arts facilities like BEK important then it sends signals out that the arts are not encouraged or well supported in Bergen. This will also reslt in garduate students and emerging artists looking to other cities and countries where they can find a more supportive environment. RETHINK THE FUTURE!

I came all the from Canada especially to do a residency at BEK through the NIFCA New Artist in Residence Program. BEK has a reputation as a dynamic and active media arts center that is far reaching. I've been aware of BEKs activites for some time, and it is recognized internationally. Lots of people in the global New Media community know about BEK and are keen to see it survive and flourish. To not fund and support BEK is a poor idea. Artists are very good at connecting the dots between countries and bridging cultures in a way that can only be healthy and enriching to both the local and remote communities. BEK must continue and get even better.

I support BEK!! Når det for tida brukes store offentlige og private ressurser til utvikling og tilpasning av ny teknologi, er det viktig å spre de offentlige midlene til miljøer som i utgangspunktet verken er næringslivsrelatert eller bundet opp i mer akademiske fagdisipliner — men som kan utnytte små ressurser i kreative, bredspektrede, kunstneriske virksomheter. BEK er et slikt miljø, som har hatt stor suksess. Det er dårlig ressursbruk å la BEK etablere seg ved hjelp av midler fra Norsk Kulturråd, for så i neste omgang å fjerne BEKs eksistensgrunnlag.
Ingen har krav på statsstøtte, selvfølgelig. Men BEK er en profesjonell virksomhet som gjør mye ut fra relativt beskjedne
bevilgninger, på områder som får større og større betydning. Mange muligheter blir umulige, hvis BEK blir nedlagt.

Bek er avgjørende. Det er en utbredt misforståelse at tiltak i Oslo er nasjonale mens aktiviteter andre steder i første rekke er lokale. BEK eksemplifiserer at dette ikke er tilfelle. BEK har sterk aktivitet både lokalt, nasjonalt og internasjonalt. BEK har gitt et avgjørende strategisk løft for ny media kunst scenen. Etableringen av BEK og TEKS har også gjort det mulig for Atelier Nord å konsentrere seg sterkere om strategisk viktige innsatsområder. Faller nodene utenfor Oslo bort vil også Atelier Nords strategi svekkes.
Alle som arbeider med økologi eller menneskelige kulturer burde vite det: en monokultur er svært sårbar, den sterkeste kulturen er den som er mest mangfoldig. BEK har gitt et betydelig bidrag til et mer spennende og mangoldig kulturliv både i Bergen, i Norge og internasjonalt.
BEK har oppnåd store faglige resultater både lokalt, nasjonalt og internasjonalt på svært kort tid. Om BEK nå faller vil et viktig fagmiljø pulveriseres.
Sammen med TEKS, Notam og Atelier Nord er BEK i Produksjonsnettverk for elektronisk kunst (PNEK) et alternativ til ett nasjonalt senter for ny media kunst i Oslo. Skal dette nettverksbaserte alternativet overleve er vi avhengig av stabile aktører i Bergen og Trondheim.
BEK må sikres tilfredstillende driftsmidler over statsbudsjettet fra og med 2004.

The expertise, professionalism and inspiration of those working at Bek has resulted in a very positive representation of Norway abroad. By the very nature of BEK`s innovation young artists have started their education much richer in skill, while older, more established artists have not only been successfully guided into the world of data, but have also found that their experience from BEK`s facilities has expanded the scope of their professional work. Really not having been East of the Rocky Mountains (USA) this is all highly theoretical for me, however I do appreciate bek.no for hosting what is one of the most fascinating stages for modern performance (/55\). It would be sad to for such a stage to be shut-down. Bek is a jewel in the world stage of New Media as well, a glitter visible from afar.

My own work on the Litter Power Package, an extensive set of modules for the Max/MSP environment, used by thousands of musicians around the world, would not have been possible without the grant from BEK which provided the opportunity for developing these tools.
BEK has contributed to numerous other important projects in all areas of electronic arts. They have served as Norway's ambassadors to the international electronic arts communities. They deserve continuing support.

I support BEK!! BEK is a very important node in the Nordic media culture scene. They are the norwegian partner organisation in Nifca Media AiR, a project linking together artist residencies specializing in media art in 10 different countries. They are also involved in NICE (Network Interface for Cultural Exchange), a diverse network of organisations and individuals in Nordic/Baltic region and beyond.
BEK has aided many Norwegian artist to be connected to the international media art scene. They have been especially important in supporting the development of open-source audiovisual software tools. Their upcoming piksel.no workshop is a great example of this - some of the most important and interesting developers in the world in this area will gather together in Bergen. BEK is one of the few organisations in Nordic countries which is trying to bring the worlds of artists and engineers closer together. This is an important issue for culture and society in general and will become even more important in future. Technological development should be influenced by arts and culture, and vice versa.

To discontinue a success story like BEK would be too obvious an example of norwegian short-sightedness. BEK builds collaboration, innovation and courage. BEK works. Ærlig talt!! Da jeg gikk på Kunstakademiet i Trondheim var BEK en svært viktig ressurs for meg i realiseringen av en rekke prosjekter både alene og i samarbeid med kunstnere andre steder i Norge og i utlandet. BEK stilte vederlagsfritt sin kompetanse og sine ressurser til disposisijon for en kunststudent på en måte jeg ikke har opplevd noe annet sted. Da jeg ved endt utdanning ble tilbudt en aspirantstilling på BEK var jeg ikke ett øyeblikk i tvil om at det var det riktige valget å si fra meg ett arbeidsstipend, pakke mann og gravid mage i kofferten for å flytte til en by hvor jeg ikke kjente noen og hvor det regner 300 dager i året.
BEK er ett utrolig viktig ressurs senter for kunstnere over hele landet, på alle nivåer, som på en eller annen måte ønsker å jobbe med digital teknologi. De besitter ett internasjonalt nettverk som gjør at de har en kompetanse som går langt utover landets grenser og det viser seg jo ikke bare i en stund som dette at det er gjensidig utveksling som gjør BEK viktig også i en internasjonal sammenheng.

I support BEK!! Det vore en stor skam om BEK inte fick fortsatt stöd då de är en av de viktigaste organisationerna inom elektronisk konst i Norge. De har dessutom ett mycket gott renommé långt utanför Norges gränser.
Ett flertalet konstnärer från BEK har medverkat i Electrohypes utställningar. Detta har alltid varit mycket tillfredställande då det har varit intressanta projekt och som har lett till fruktbara och givande möten. Det skulle bli en stor sorg och saknad om BEK tvingas lägga ner sin verksamhet.

For me, BEK provided a point of entry into Norway, which resulted in developing mutually-beneficial working relationships with Norwegian artists. Having been involved deeply in electronic art activities in Norway since the original establishment of Atelier Nord's electronic media laboratory, I was quite shocked to hear of BEK's possible loss of funding. I find this decision to be remarkably short-sighted on the the part of the cultural funders in Bergen. BEK is an active and creative node in a greater international network of cutting-edge cultural activities in new media. It would be a loss to the local community, the Scandinavian scene, the European scene, and even further! Norway's lead in the realm of Electronic Art would be negatively affected to say the least. I support BEK!! Electronic art forms are at the beginning of their of their life span, unlike oil painting and accoustic music. It is incumbant on the funders of the general culture of a nation to support not only archival arts, but also the future of art. BEK is essential for Norwegen artists' access to the tools and mindsets of future art. If the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts in the USA had not funded the Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY from the 1970s onward, I would not have produced a body of analog and digital art, and to a great extent, single channel and video installation art would not exist as art forms today. It is the contemporary artist who sees the future. It is the museum curator who sees the past. The government and supporters of the arts must seek a balance in their support of both.

Dette var ille, Valgjerd! Kjære Valgjerd Svarstad Haugland, har du sovet i timen? I det lengste vil jeg i alle fall tro at du må ha duppet av et øyeblikk da finansieringen av den elektroniske kunsten ble tatt opp under regjeringens behandling av statsbudsjettet. Av kulturmeldingen som departementet ditt presenterte tidligere i år, gikk det frem at du bl.a. har hatt som siktemål å trygge en basisfinansiering for de elektroniske kunstsentrene i Bergen og Trondheim (BEK og TEKS) etter at prosjektperioden var over.
Da skulle du ha visst at prosjektperioden for det ene av sentrene, BEK, er over alt ved dette årets utgang og at den aktuelle basisfinansiering må tas inn i det fremlagte statsbudsjett. Men så viser det seg altså at det har du likevel ikke sørget for å få på plass. En beskjeden post på kr. 800.000 er utelatt med fatale konsekvenser for det unge og høyst nyskapende bergenske kunstsenteret BEK. Senteret i Trondheim har på sin side sjanse til å forlenge prosjektperioden med støtte fra Kulturrådet enda et år.
BEK i Bergen har ikke mer å hente fra Kulturrådet, og det opprører meg da som bergenser å se at regjeringen øker budsjettposten til to Oslo-baserte elektroniske kunstsentre (NoTAM og Atelier Nord) til hele 4,5 millioner kroner. Påplussingen NoTAM fikk i år tilsvarer nøyaktig det beløp som BEK har mottatt fra Kulturrådet for inneværende år - nemlig kr. 600.000.
Dette er med skam å melde ikke bare et svik mot Kulturrådet og departementets egne løfter og målsettinger i kulturmeldingen, men dertil også en klar forskjellsbehandling på bekostning av Bergen. Dette skjer da samtidig med at Bergen kommune og Hordaland fylke har ført opp BEK med faste poster i sine budsjetter for neste år. Kulturstatsråden kan dermed heller ikke skylde på manglende lokal oppfølging - vel vitende om at BEK ikke vil kunne fortsette sin virksomhet uten statlig medvirkning..
Følgelig må dette være en mer eller mindre bevisstløs handling fra din side, Valgjerd.
Du kan umulig med din vestnorske bakgrunn ha latt deg påvirke til en så åpenbar favorisering av Oslo som dette unektelig er. Du kan da heller ikke for alvor mene at den slags forskjellsbehandling er i samsvar med regjeringens kultursatsing. Eller er det virkelig slik å forstå at så snart et nytt kulturprosjekt utenfor Oslo-gryten viser seg å ha livets rett, så settes foten ned.
BEK er nemlig - slik jeg har hatt anledning å følge det på nært hold fra starten av, et ektefødt produkt av kulturbyen Bergen og det mangfold av kulturelle aktiviteter som i de senere år har vokset frem nettopp her. BEK er altså ikke noe som er pådyttet byen utenfra i likhet med de tvangsforflyttinger av statlige institusjoner som regjeringen har stått for. Her dreier det seg om nyskapning i egentlig forstand, og kultursatsing vil som kjent også kunne gi verdifulle nye arbeidsplasser i distrtikts-Norge.
Ved betydelig egeninnsats og dugnadsånd blant unge bergenske ildsjeler, har BEK etter hvert stått frem som et både nasjonalt og internasjonalt anerkjent produksjonssenter for elektronisk kunst - og som en viktig ressurs i det vestnorske miljøet for samtidskunst. BEK har sågar ligget i forkant av utviklingen på dette området her i landet, og Bergen blir av mange utenfor landets grenser i dag også regnet som et europeisk hovedsenter innen elektronisk musikk. Det bekrefter også det unge kunstverkstedets betydelige internasjonale kontaktnett.
Det er lite sannsynlig at alle disse positive signalene fra miljøet for samtidskunst i Bergen kan ha gått kulturstatsråden forbi. Når da kulturrådets positive prosjektstøtte til BEK ikke er fulgt opp i statsbudsjettet, må det utvilsomt ha glippet for deg Valgjerd. Det er likevel ennå ikke for sent å gjøre skaden god igjen - jo før, jo heller. For dette kan verken kulturstatsråden eller regjeringen ha sittende på seg.

Jeg støtter BEK! Den elektroniske musikk- og kunstscenen i Norge er avhengig av institusjoner/miljøer som tilretteleggere av arbeidsmuligheter, utviklingsarbeid, verkpresentasjoner, utdanning og diskurs. Det er viktig at slike steder springer ut av lokal aktivitet. Denne finnes i Bergen i rikt monn, og BEKs eksistens er derfor i mitt skjønn noe av en selvfølge, slik den har vært det siden opprettelsen i 2000.
BEK har oppnådd betydelig økonomisk støtte på lokalt nivå, og da er det vanskelig å forstå at sentral finansiering skal utebli totalt, spesielt tatt i betraktning at BEK har en vellykket oppstart/forsøksperiode på 4 år bak seg. BEK inngår videre i et produksjonsnettverk som har blitt fordelaktig omtalt i kulturmeldingen, og BEKs eventuelle bortfall vil dermed virke mot den intensjonen som er uttrykt der.
NOTAM vil med dette oppfordre bevilgende myndigheter til å finne en grunnfinansiering for BEK som gjør at BEK kan videreføre sin utvikling av verktøy og arbeidsmuligheter for kunstnere.

I support BEK!! There is a tendency in the current economicaly harsh and poltically unstable climate to shy away from more exeperimental forms of cultural production, which still needs to somehow proove themselves. Particularly the new media culture arena has been hit by scepticism, following the economic decline of the new media sector.
Partly this scepticism can be understood, as too often in the 90s the emphasis was placed on the arts as an informal but highly creative laboratory for the new media industry. What is important to realise is that the demise of the economic boom around new media is not mirrored by a decline of the importance of new commuication technologies as a a social and cultural phenomenon. In fact in these areas new media / new communication technologies have been, and continue to be, an immense success.
Therefore decision makers and policy makers should be careful not to jump to too easy conclusions. We need, as a society, spaces of experimentation and creative and critical enquiry into what new media mean for all of us. The arts are an excellent place where this kind of investigation can happen quite naturally. But only in the arts is this enquiry also combined with a deeply rooted humantarian perspective, and an immediate awareness of what constitutes a meaningful human experience under new conditions.
New media and new communication technologies are simply too important for our society and social life, to leave them solely in the hands of the technicians, the developers, and the large multimedia corporations. If we now withdraw from the field of the new media arts, one very important cost-effective and creative source of understanding will be lost beyond the possibility of future recovery, as knowledge goes out with people. Therefore, the question is bigger than just BEK, and bigger than just Norway, as similar conservative reflexes can also be observed in other countries, including for that matter The Netherlands....

I support BEK!! Synes at departemanget her burde fulgt opp sin egen kulturmelding ("Siktemålet er å tryggja ei basisfinansiering for BEK og TEKS, også etter at prosjektperioden er over."). Spesielt siden elektronisk kunst tvilsomt vil bli mindre aktuelt i framtiden.

I support BEK!! BEK er internasjonalt anerkjent som elektronisk knutepunkt, jeg vil påstå en av de få kunstrelaterte institusjonene kjent utenfor Norge, gjennom hosting av viktige mailinglister,workshops, programvareutviklig, residencies mm, og det er utrolig visjonsløst å la denne ressursen dø ut.

La BEK leve! Vi vil gjerne uttrykke vår store frustrasjon i forhold til departementets manglende oppfølging av kulturrådets mangeårige satsning. Det vil være å kaste mange milloner og masse idealistisk arbeid ut vinduet. I skjæringen mellom forskning, utvikling og kunstnerisk praksis har BEK i den korte tiden de har eksistert, vært svært betydningsfulle for feltet, både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.
Vi håper derfor at departementet tar en runde til og følger opp sin egen kulturmelding!

BEK på statsbudsjettet Kjære dei som har noko med det,
Eg er ein av mange som vart skuffa då BEK ikkje kom på statsbudsjettet. BEK har vore ein viktig og inspirerande kontakt for meg i mitt arbeid. Har deltatt på kurs og gjennomført prosjekt på BEK. Har også planar for framtida kor BEK er tenkt som ein viktig samarbeidspart. Slik eg ser det er BEK ein sentrar ressurs for ny kunstmiljøet på vestlandet (også nasjonalt og internasjonalt - som me alle er ein del av)

Lenge leve BEK BEK er for tiden det mest spennende senteret for elektronisk kunst i Norge og en stor inspirasjon for oss i andre deler av landet. Det er andre sentere nærmere der jeg bor MED støtte over statsbudsjettet, men fokuset BEK legger på realtime manipulasjon er uuverderlig. Lenge leve BEK

BEK og forslag til Statsbudsjett 2004 Angående BEKs situasjon
PNEK - Produksjonsnettverk for Elektronisk Kunst, beklager på det sterkeste at BEK ikke er foreslått inn i Statsbudsjettet for 2004 etter endt prøvedrift. BEK er en særdeles viktig ressurs i PNEKs nettverk. BEKs kompetanse på det tverrfaglige elektroniske feltet er uvurdelig, og deres faglige nettverk og virksomhet er unik både i lokal, nasjonal og internasjonal sammenheng. Bergen kommune har foreslått å støtte BEK neste år, og senest i forrige uke mottok de nyheten om at Hordaland fylkeskommune instiller BEK på fast post. BEK vil imidlertid ikke overleve uten ytterligere tilskudd. Det er bedrøvelig at Statsbudsjettet ikke følger opp regjeringens egen Kulturmelding, der det blant annet står at "siktemålet er å tryggja ei basisfinansiering for BEK og TEKS". PNEK ser
svært alvorlig på denne situasjonen, og vil jobbe aktivt med BEK for videre eksitens.

SV: [. e - k u n s t .] BEK ikke inne på statsbudsjettet Hei Trond, inviter kulturministeren til workshopen! Og vis frem en del av de nasjonale og internasjonale samarbeidsprosjektene dere har hatt de siste årene. Sørg for at noen fra IT bransjen, kanskje Telenor? Er tilstede og backer dere opp! Jeg skriver gjerne under på en underskriftskampanje, kommer med argumenter for hvorfor BEK er viktig - etter mitt inntrykk er BEK den av de elektroniske verkstedene i Norge som har vært mest innovative og produktive. Kunne vi egentlig sagt at vi hadde verksted for elektroniske kunst hvis BEK ikke hadde eksistert - neppe!

BEK ikke inne på statsbudsjettet Statsbudsjettet ble lagt frem i dag kl. 1000. BEK er ikke foreslått inn på statsbudsjettet. kutlurrådet har tidligere gitt klare signaler på at vi ikke vil kunne få videre tilskudd fra dem. Med andre ord ser kan det nå se svært mørkt ut for BEKs fremtid, og vi trenger i tiden fremover en kraftig mobilisering fra alle som kan bidra.
Samtidig må det sies å være en kulturpolitisk skandale av dimensjoner. Kutlurrådet har de siste årene satset systematisk på styrking av produksjonsvilkårene for elektronisk kunst på landsbasis gjennom støtte til BEK, TEKS i Trondheim samt nettverket oss, Atelier Nord og NoTAM.
Kulturmeldingen signaliserer at Kutlurrådets satsing må videreføres: PNEK (Produksjonsnettverk for elektronisk kunst) er eit fireårig prosjekt finansiert av Norsk kulturråd. PNEK legg til rette for kunstprosjekt og fagleg utveksling mellom aktørane i nettverket, Atelier Nord, BEK (Bergen Elektroniske Kunstsenter), NOTAM (Norsk Nettverk for Teknologi, Akustikk og Musikk) og TEKS (Trondheim Elektroniske Kunstsenter). Atelier Nord og NOTAM er tiltak som får støtte som faste tiltak forvalta av Norsk kulturråd (kap. 320 post 74). Siktemålet er å tryggja ei basisfinansiering for BEK og TEKS, også etter at prosjektperioden er over.
Statsbudsjettet følger overhode ikke opp regjeringens egen kulturmelding.
Dersom BEK nå legges ned, vil hele satsingen være forgjeves. Man vil da ende
med en situasjon der Oslo er tilgodesett med 2 organisasjoner med samlet
statstilskudd i 2003 på 4.4 mill. mens det ikke finnes noen infrastruktur i
resten av landet. Mer info kommer.

I tillegg har en god del enkeltpersoner utrykt stor skuffelse over nyheten om BEKs truede fremtid, imidlertid har Ballade av plasshensyn måttet kutte ut mange av de minst elaborerte innleggene. Vi antar at de ovensiterte innlegg gir en pekepinn på BEKs viktige posisjon og vi gjentar vår oppfordring til våre lesere om å støtte oppropet.
