Finn Mortensen (1922-1983)
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1963)

Finn Mortensen was Norway's first Professor of Composition. From a point of departure in neo-classicism he became deeply involved with serial techniques. Mortensen introduced serialism and aleatorics to the Norwegian public. He defined serialism as "Athematic, aperiodical music, organized as series, led by the principle of communication between extremes." In his single-movement piano concerto, the dynamics and timbre are the extremes: Thick clusters with spread tones in all the keys. Ultra strong fortissimo against ultra soft pianissimo.
