Thomas Strønen (small)

Thomas Strønen
Trommeslager, Komponist

Thomas Strønen studied jazz and composition at the Music Conservatory of Trondheim, Norway, graduating in 1999.

Since his student days he has been involved with improvised music in different forms and contexts, creating structures and textures to generate unexpected results.

He is one of Norway´s most prolific drummers, known from his involvement with Food (with Iain Ballamy), Humcrush (with Ståle Storløkken), Meadow ( John Taylor, Tore Brunborg), Parish (with Bobo Stenso), Pohlitz (solo), Maria Kannegaard Trio and others, where he has often also taken on the role of writer, arranger and sometimes producer. He is a melodic type of drummer and focuses on larger forms and timbre, playing both acoustic drums and a set up with live electronics, bells and gongs.

Strønen is recording for the great German label ECM and also for Rune Grammofon. As a composer, Strønen has contributed to the release of over forty recordings as well as several commissioned works for festivals (including the Bath and Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Ultima Comtemporary Music Festival) and radio (BBC, NRK, Deutsche Rundfunk, Swedish Radio, and others).

Strønen has played with internationally acclaimed musicians worldwide, including John Taylor, Bobo Stenson, Sidsel Endresen, Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils petter Molvaer, Tomasz Stanko (PL), Koichi Makigami (JP), Ernst Reijseger (NL), Cikada String Quartet and others. He has toured Europe, USA, Asia and Canada during the last few years with the bands mentioned above.
