Established: 1991
Established in 1991, to bring chamber music and musicians of exceptionally high quality to an attractive and receptive area of Norway; The joint artistic directors are the internationally acclaimed pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and viola-player Lars Anders Tomter; The festival focuses on chamber music and on works for small orchestra which can capitalise on the fine Risør Festival Strings; The programmes are diverse; the repertoire is strong, embracing Norwegian works and a broad range of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century music, both familiar and unfamiliar; Artists are resident in Risør for the entire week, thus making possible the mixing and matching of works for different ensembles within a single concert; The artists are drawn from among the leading names on the international circuit and from the rich fund of Norwegian talent. Set in an idyllic part of south-eastern Norway, the town offers the perfect backdrop for a festival of chamber music, performed in the 17th-century wooden church and 19th-century Town Hall. There are from three to five concerts a day, but the Festival?s popularity, combined with low ticket prices, ensures that all the available seats are filled.
