Stavanger Symphony Orchestra has developed rapidly over the last two decades in a direction that places it at the forefront of Norwegian musical life. It consists today of a total number of 75 musicians, but is frequently enlarged to meet the demands of the romantic repertoire. The Orchestra has gained an international reputation for its quality and interesting profile, through, since 1990, the fine artistic leadership of Alexander Dmitriev, chief conductor until 1998, who commanded the great romantic and contemporary repertoire, and Frans Brüggen, artistic director for "early repertoire", now Conductor Laureate.
Through the work done with Frans Brüggen, the Orchestra has earned itself a place at centre of development of authentic performance techniques (on modern instruments). With this repertoire the Orchestra is invited to various festivals and concert series throughout Europe, receiving warm and enthusiastic reviews.
