Vestlandsfanden began rehearsals in the fall of 1979, played their first gig that Christmas for an elated group of prisoners and guards at Haugesund prison, then officially debuted their stage show in 1980 and they've been on the road ever since. After 30 years of continuously touring the country, you'd be hard pressed to find a single "whole in the wall" venue that's been left unvisited by the band, and many multiple times.Vestlandsfanden quickly developed from a local phenomenon to a rock solid Nordic institution.
With songs like "Plukka plommer i Hardanger", "For livets glade gutter går solen aldri ned", and dozens more well known tunes, the band gained recognition not only in their native Norway, but in Sweden and Denmark as well. To celebrate the millennium, the city of Hong Kong hosted the red hot band from Norway for 5 performances, where over 50,000 Chinese attended the first concert alone. With audiences that span three generations, Vestlandsfanden still tours domestically and abroad today. Over the years, the members of Vestlandsfanden have found their way to worn and torn dance halls, modern concert venues, corporate events, and music festivals of all sizes. Though as diverse as their touring schedule has been over the years, one thing remains constant...a euphoric audience left screaming for more. Even the most hardened critics have fallen in love with the band's sound, and there's no doubt that first time listeners and veteran fans alike will leave the show in awe with memories that will last a lifetime. Simply put, Vestlandsfanden is a rockin' live band who has written its own chapter in the history of Norwegian folk-rock and country music.
Throughout their career, Vestlandsfanden has remained in the forefront of their genre. Refusing to be complacent, the band prolifically creates new Norwegian songs crafted in their unique style inspired by American, Irish, Scottish and Nordic folk music. Vestlandsfanden was the first to collaborate with renowned West Norwegian authors by inviting them to contribute with their lyrics. The band's lead singer, Reidar Brendeland, has remained the driving force of the band, and has always written songs with the following mindset: "You can enjoy both Donald Duck and Shakespeare." And with that philosophy, the band's songs depict and describe the diversity of Norwegian daily life and strife by being warm, thoughtful, crude, fragile, cunning, funny, and perhaps even politically incorrect. This true to life type of songwriting is what attracts music lovers and distinguished journalists alike. Dagbladet's music critic Fredrik Wandrup awarded Vestlandsfanden 5 out of 6 stars for their latest record, "Tipping & Trygd", along with the following statement: "A good portrayal of hard times...no nonsense." Vestlansfanden's accomplishments are truly remarkable...13 records and over 3000 gigs in 30 years says it all.
Vestlandsfanden are now releasing their 14. th album and are now searching for international partners to expand into new territories.
